Step into the Maya underworld with a journey to Actun Tunichil Muknal, or ATM Cave—one of Belize’s most breathtaking and spiritually significant archaeological sites. Hidden in the heart of the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, this sacred cave was once used for Maya ceremonies, including bloodletting rituals and human sacrifices.
Inside, you’ll find calcified skeletons, pottery, and stoneware left untouched for centuries—including the famous “Crystal Maiden,” the sparkling remains of a teenage girl whose bones have fused with minerals over time.
Your adventure begins with a hike through lush jungle, river crossings, and a swim to the cave entrance. Once inside, you’ll wade, climb, and crawl through chambers filled with glittering stalactites and sacred relics, eventually reaching the cathedral-like main chamber and the stone sepulchre that gave the cave its name.
To protect the site, visitors must wear socks only while exploring the upper chambers. Photography is not allowed without special permits.
This is a challenging, awe-inspiring experience and one of the most unforgettable ways to connect with Belize’s ancient Maya heritage. After your tour, enjoy a hearty local lunch before heading back to San Ignacio.
