Located about 76 miles off the coast of Placencia, Lighthouse Reef Atoll is one of the country’s most remote and breathtaking marine destinations—and home to the world-famous Great Blue Hole.
🌊 The Great Blue Hole
A true natural wonder, the Great Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole over 300 meters (984 feet) wide and 124 meters (407 feet) deep. It became globally known after being explored by Jacques Cousteau in 1971, who named it one of the top 10 scuba diving sites in the world.
Divers and snorkelers are drawn here by the chance to explore:
- Towering stalactites and limestone caverns deep below the surface
- Crystal-clear waters teeming with sharks, groupers, and other marine life
- A truly once-in-a-lifetime underwater adventure
🏝️ Lighthouse Reef Atoll
Surrounding the Blue Hole, Lighthouse Reef Atoll is one of only four atolls in the Caribbean. It features stunning coral reefs, colorful fish, and some of the best diving and snorkeling in Belize. It’s also home to Half Moon Caye, a protected natural monument with:
- White sand beaches
- Nesting colonies of the rare Red-footed Booby birds
- Great spots for picnics, swimming, and nature walks
